Africa @ the United Nations General Assembly

General Debate of the 80th Session

Opening under the theme “Better together: 80 years and more for peace, development and human rights,” this milestone UN session comes at a time when Africa, alongside the world, faces mounting challenges that demand stronger multilateral cooperation.

The high-level period begins on 22 September with a day of summits and commemorations, including the UN’s 80th anniversary, an SDG Moment, and 30 years since the Beijing World Conference on Women. African leaders will join peers to address global priorities, from sustainable development to peace in Palestine and the two-State solution.

From 23 to 29 September, the General Assembly Hall will once again serve as the stage for presidents, prime ministers, and monarchs—including many from Africa—to share national visions for peace, development, human rights, and collective action.

Key agenda items include a biennial summit on financing for sustainable development critical to Africa’s growth, a Climate Summit of urgent importance to Africa’s vulnerable communities, the launch of a Global Dialogue on AI Governance, and discussions on global health, noncommunicable diseases, and human rights concerns in Myanmar.
