Flooding across Sierra Leone devastated communities and farmlands, forcing many young people — including Michael — to pause their education. Growing up, Michael saw firsthand how climate impacts strained local farmers and damaged their crops, shaping his understanding of the challenges they faced and his dedication to finding climate-focused solutions.
“I moved into the space of climate change to see how I can advocate for climate solutions and create inclusive participation of children and youth,” he says.
The true turning point for Michael, however, occurred while implementing a community project where farmers struggled to preserve yields without proper electricity – highlighting the desperate need for modern solutions.
"That was the defining moment for my dedication to climate-smart agriculture," he explains. Driven by the belief that Sierra Leone’s youth hold the key to food security, Michael shifted his focus to renewable energy and evidence-based policy to build community resilience.
From grassroots movements to a national force of change
Currently pursuing an M.Sc. in Environmental Management and Quality Control at Njala University, Michael blends academic rigor with grassroots activism. In 2021, Michael co-founded the Forum for Agriculture, Innovation, and Empowerment for Children and Youth (FAICEY-SL), a youth-led organization committed to driving positive changes in sustainable agriculture and responsible environmental practices.
Programs focus on training farmers and communities in climate-smart practices, accelerating Sierra Leone’s shift to renewable energy through community-scale solar projects, promoting environmental conservation tactics, and supporting school and out-of-school youth in climate education.
FAICEY-SL has evolved from a grassroot movement into a national force of change, successfully deploying solar dryer technology in communities such as Lalehun, Binkolo, and Kpawula. These projects empower local farmers to add value to their crops, reduce waste, and prepare for any future challenges as climate change impacts continue to rise across the continent.
“I see this initiative as a vessel for empowerment. Not only are we promoting methods that enhance food sufficiency and promote healthier environments, but we are also equipping young people with the skills to transform their own environments,” explains Michael.
For instance, energy efficiency remains a major challenge in Sierra Leone. Through FAIECY-SL, Michael provided in-person and practical training and support to 30 young people on renewable energy with a key focus on solar installation and maintenance.
Additionally, uncontrolled waste management is a serious concern in cities like Bo and Freetown. Through his organization, Michael has been supporting the Waste Management of the Bo City Council by mobilizing young people from his university and community to participate in his operation “Clean Bo Initiative” and providing free training on waste recycling methods. These initiatives support and empower young people with the skills to transform their communities.
Community impact beyond Sierra Leone
In 2023, Michael was appointed a UNICEF Climate Youth Advocate for spearheading climate solutions in his community. From creating a more climate-resilient planet to fighting against gender-based violence to championing the rights of children with disabilities, UNICEF Youth Advocates are speaking out and taking action for children’s rights everywhere.
“Protecting Africa’s environment is essential for the future, defining the modern African youth as one who uses education to navigate global systems while remaining rooted in local values,” add Michael. To him, environmental stewardship is the only way to build a sustainable, self-reliant future for the continent.
Beyond his advocacy and work through FAIECY SL, Michael’s influence extends to international diplomacy. He represented African youth at COP29 events and currently leads capacity-building for 20 youth-led environmental initiatives across the continent through UNESCO and Nestlé.
The UNESCO x Nestlé "Youth Impact" capacity-building initiative is designed to empower young changemakers by providing them with the essential resources, mentorship, and technical skills needed to scale their community projects. As a Regional Capacity-Building Partner, the focus is on monitoring the implementation of these youth-led initiatives across Africa, ensuring grantees receive tailored feedback to maximize their social and environmental impact.
